lonely birthday, but it’s ok | Bi-Weekly Update

Here’s the thing – I thought I could, and would actually have to, celebrate my birthday with those of my fifteen roommates who are home. We were asked not to go back to our university cities right now unless necessary because of a major corona outbreak there, but for many that message came too late as the semester is starting up. Personally I was supposed to have a hospital appointment that could not be moved, so I would have to travel there. Turns out, when you have a possible allergic reaction to the kind of medicines I am on and an ambulance has to treat you, it’s suddenly (and thankfully) possible to postpone hospital appointments for two weeks more. I’m good enough right now that I could probably go, but I would have to be much more in and out of the hospital to take tests, and that increases the corona risk so much more than if I was in total lockdown with my friends. Well roommates, but we’re pretty much all friends. Which leads me to do all that here and instead celebrating my birthday alone, but with my lovely mom.

it’s actually a lemon cake underneath the pink

In a few more days I will know how badly my start of the year will look like and I’m not looking forward to it. Sometimes there’s only bad alternatives, and there’s nothing you can do except accept that. Ah, I’ve always told myself and those around me that when physics & math are my biggest problems, my life is good. I’m truly excited for that too be the case again. I had a reminder of that when someone (kindly) asked me if it wasn’t better to take a reduced course-work this year, and the pure rage I felt at having the one good thing taken away from me right now. Of course, at a point I will admit defeat, but that’s not one week in.

New book posts:

Other books I’ve been reading:

  • Rereading Corazón and reading Tesoro by Yesika Salgado (poetry)
  • Shame is an ocean I swim across by Mary Lambert (poetry)

I’m so sorry this is how your year is starting out- I don’t know enough about your situation to make any assumptions, but I hope things work out as best they can for you.

Happy birthday, btw. That cake is absolutely too cute to exist, the sprinkles are sheer perfection.

Thank you! I’ve had too much experience with bad birthdays already, but it’s the sudden change that I dislike dealing with. Still, there will be a time & place to celebrate some day ❤

Absolutely! The best moments in life are those you don’t plan for, anyway. You don’t mark them in your calendar. By the way, does this mean you’re a fellow Capricorn? Do you believe in zodiac signs? haha

I’m also a capricorn. yes!! I don’t believe in zodiac signs, but they’re fun and something my friendgroup uses without really believing in them. Do you, and if so, what does they mean to you? ❤

Oh I’m totally into zodiac! Perhaps I’m not as knowledgeable on astrology as a lot of people seem to be (you know, the people who upon meeting you ask you for your ‘sun, moon, rising’…), but I like to believe that there are some higher orders that aren’t scientifically acceptable, because they’re beyond the scope of scientific understanding. To be fair, I’m a Capricorn in Western zodiac and a Fire Ox in Chinese zodiac, and both these signs REALLY fit my description… so I can’t really force myself to believe that it’s an accident. Of course, my mum’s not spectacularly much of a Leo, so there’s definitely exceptions… but there’s always exceptions to rules.
So yeah, I do believe in zodiac signs, I don’t mind that a lot of people don’t and think astrology and that kind of stuff is BS. :p When you read a Capricorn description though, do you think that any of it suits you to any extent?

That sounds fun. I do like personality tests more. I feel capricorn has a bit of the ‘oldest child’ aspect to it and i am responsible to a point and certainly has a tendency toward being practical/realistic, but i’m so much more of a dreamer, emotional person etc. than i’ve seen anyone describe capricorn as hahha.

(Oh, also I meant to say that there’s so many bullshit horoscopes on the internet and in colour press… I don’t tend to believe in horoscopes because it’s so easy just to make one up. But I do believe that there’s something more to zodiac overall).

Yeah, I love personality tests too! What are your results? My most recent ones are that I’m an Enneagram 4, and the 16 personalities is something like INFP or something like that.
Not sure about the “oldest child” aspect, I’m rather childish and the younger child of two, and totally not a leadership sort of person, like you would see an “oldest child” as. I’m hardworking though, and diligent. I think that’s the most Capricorn thing about me.

I never remember my enneagram, but I’ve gotten infp on every mbti I’ve taken. It’s often like slightly more feeling than thinking (like 10%), which makes sense to me hahha.
I definitely didn’t mean that every older child has certain qualities, but certainly in my case there was some added responsibility and different parenting style. Still laughing at how I was just older enough (five years) than my sibling to literally be advicing like “this stricter way is not going to work, you need to do it more like *this*” on parenting to my mom (who is the loveliest person btw).
